Wait…so what’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?

Conservatories and orangeries have a lot to offer as home improvements, but which is the right choice for your property? We’re here to help!

If you are looking to have a conservatory or orangery installed, they are an excellent way of enjoying more natural light, provide extra living space and of course, increasing the value of your home. A conservatory traditionally has a fully glazed roof, up to 80% of glazed surfaces to benefit from natural light and minimal brick work. However, an orangery traditionally has more brick work/a solid structure, a roof lantern rather than a fully glazed top and is designed to adopt a natural extension of the home.

Conservatories are often located close to a property’s garden, primarily to provide a view of the garden from inside the home. Traditional conservatory designs include Edwardian, Victorian and lean-to conservatories. With less glass than a conservatory, a traditional orangery can offer more privacy, making it popular as a dining or kitchen area. They can also be specifically designed to closely match the interior and exterior aesthetic of the home.
Fun fact: Did you know that the conservatory was developed out of the orangery design, incorporating a higher proportion of glazing to allow other varieties of plants to be grown in cooler climates?
